Who is it
suited to? |
|
BRIC+ Study Tours are relevant to all wealth management professionals
who have a responsibility to understand the drivers and outlook for
investment markets, one of the three pillars of portfolio construction. |
|
Why attend a BRIC+ Study Tour? |
|
Just as England grew to economic dominance in the late 1800s and
the US in the 1900s, this century we'll see the emergence and
dominance of the Big Rapidly Industrialising Countries -
particularly Brazil, Russia, India and China.
It is therefore imperative that wealth management professionals
become as familiar with the developing markets as they are the developed
markets - and the most sensible place to start is with the BRIC
countries. They're not only the biggest growth markets, they're
also excellent case studies for the challenges and opportunities
within other, smaller developing markets. And, of course, the most effective and rewarding way to learn about
any investment market is to experience it for yourself!

Why China in particular? |
|
China has an enormous impact on global
investment markets. In just 30 years, it has
transformed itself from a centrally planned system largely
closed to international trade to a market-oriented economy with
a rapidly growing private sector. Last decade, we saw the “arrival” of China
- by 2010,
China was the world’s largest exporter and outperformed all
other major economies with GDP growth around 10%, overtaking
Japan to become the world’s second largest economy.
This decade, the more
striking story will be rise of China’s new middle class. The
number of its people entering the middle class will peak during
this decade.
As the world’s most populous nation with 1.3 billion people,
China’s rising incomes will have a much greater impact on global
demand for value-added goods (cars, office equipment,
technology, etc) than any other country. These shifts in
spending provide significant opportunities for those building
portfolios. But the China story is not without its risks, amid
high inflation, a speculative property bubble and debt at 200%
of GDP.
As the largest and fastest growing of the BRIC countries, and
given its enormous impact on the global economy, China is the
most important developing market of which wealth management
professionals must gain a
first-hand knowledge, understanding and experience. |

Sunday
Our
BRIC+ Study Tour China commences in Shanghai,
China’s dynamic commercial commercial capital. After an
orientation briefing in the morning at which you'll meet your
fellow delegates and have a detailed briefing on our week’s
program, we spend the afternoon on a guided walking tour of
Shanghai’s historic waterfront to the centre of the city’s
heart, People’s Square, with its historic old buildings and, finally, along the development of Suzhou Creek.
Monday
We are up early for a day of back-to-back investment briefings on
China's economy and business environment, as well as backgrounders on
China’s equity, debt and financial services markets.
Tuesday
We’re out and about in Shanghai, for two investment case
studies, each focused on a key sector of China's economy, and
incorporating company and site visits.
Wednesday
In the morning, we fly to Beijing, then travel by bus to a purpose-built training
facility at the foot of the Great Wall for an in-depth
briefing with our Chinese elder statesman, Xisu Wang >,
discussing China’s complex society. Later that afternoon, we
walk along the Great Wall and watch the sun go down.
Thursday
We have the Great Wall to ourselves as we watch the sun rise,
then join our Grand Master, Xisu Wang, for a further interactive discussion
about China. We then return by bus to Beijing for our next investment
case study.
Friday
It’s an early start as we make our way to our final
investment case study. Then, over lunch, we have our Key
Takeouts workshop in which delegates share and debate their key
takeouts from the Study Tour. In the afternoon, we take a
tour of some of the key sites of Beijing, followed by our final
dinner at an iconic Beijing restaurant.
Saturday
Delegates are able to leave from today - those flying out later
in the day can spend more time exploring Beijing (own
arrangements) before heading to the airport
for the flight home.
